St Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a priest and the founder of the Society of Jesus. Originally a soldier, he underwent a profound spiritual conversion after being gravely wounded. From then on he devoted his life to the following of Christ, to education and to the missions.
Ignatius composed the Spiritual Exercises to deepen faith and the soul's relationship with God, and he placed great emphasis on prayer, self-discipline and ordering one's own life according to the will of God. Under his leadership the Jesuit order grew into an important force for education, mission and spiritual renewal in the Church.
