St Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was a bishop, a Father of the Church and one of the most influential thinkers of the Christian tradition. After a long period of inner searching and doubt he came to the faith by the grace of God and was baptised. His conversion shaped the rest of his life profoundly and made him a powerful witness to repentance.
As Bishop of Hippo, Augustine devoted himself with great dedication to the care of souls and the preaching of the faith. In his many writings he united spiritual depth with personal experience of faith. Central themes of his thought are the love of God, the importance of divine grace and the insight that man finds his true rest only in God.
