St Padre Pio of Pietrelcina (1887–1968) was a Capuchin priest who led a life of intense prayer, penance and devotion to God. For many years he bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which he accepted in obedience and humility. His priestly ministry was closely united with the sufferings of Christ. Padre Pio spent many hours each day in the confessional and led countless souls to conversion and reconciliation with God. The Holy Eucharist stood at the centre of his life and spirituality. Through his work, his spiritual clarity and his fidelity to the Church, he became a guide in the faith for many of the faithful.
