Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a priest and the founder of the Society of Jesus. Originally a soldier, he experienced a profound spiritual conversion following a serious injury. From then on, he dedicated his life to following Christ, education, and missionary work.
Ignatius developed the Spiritual Exercises to deepen one’s faith and relationship with God, and placed great emphasis on prayer, self-discipline, and aligning one’s life with God’s will. Under his leadership, the Society of Jesus grew into a major force for education, mission, and spiritual deepening within the Church.
