Saint Peter was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles and the first pope of the Church. His original name was Simon, and he worked as a fisherman in Galilee. Jesus gave him the name Peter, “the Rock,” and entrusted him with the special task of leading the Church.

Peter is known for his steadfast faith, but also for his human frailty, such as his threefold denial of Jesus before the crucifixion. After Jesus’ resurrection, he became a courageous preacher of the Gospel. He traveled to Rome, where he founded the Church and eventually died a martyr.
