centerpiece

Front “Deus Vult” (= God wills it)

This call was heard in 1095 when Pope Urban II called for the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont.

“Deus vult!” became the battle cry of the Crusaders, but even more: an expression of obedience to God’s will and the willingness to defend the Holy Land.

Back of the Jerusalem Cross

It consists of a large cross with four smaller crosses in the corners. This symbol was adopted in the 11th century as the coat of arms of the Crusader state, the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Cross represents the five wounds of Christ (hands, feet, and side).

crucifix

Above : INRI – Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum (“Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”) – the inscription that Pilate had placed above the cross of Christ (John 19:19).

Left and right : the Greek letters Alpha (Α) and Omega (Ω) – symbols for Christ as the beginning and end of all things (Rev 22:13).

Below : the Chi-Rho (☧), the oldest Christ monogram, composed of the Greek letters Chi (Χ) and Rho (Ρ), the first letters of Christos – symbol for Christ, the King and Victor.

Reverse: the old Templar motto: Non nobis, Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da gloriam ("Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory." – Psalm 113B:1 / 115:1 according to the Vulgate). This verse was the spiritual motto of the Templars, who saw themselves as warriors of Christ: humble before God, resolute in the service of the Church.
