In 1830, Our Lady appeared to the novice Catherine Labourè in the Rue du Bac in Paris. An oval frame of light formed around Our Lady, and the following inscription appeared: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you." Catherine heard a voice saying, "Have a medal minted in this image. All who wear it will receive great graces. Graces will be abundant for those who wear it with trust." Our Lady then showed her what the reverse of the medal should look like. The first medals were minted in 1832. Soon, miracles followed miracles, and the medal's triumph began, which was soon known everywhere as the "Miraculous Medal."
